ARTS and FASHION ,when stylists loved this combination!
Twenties, New York. This is the period in which Elsa Schiaparelli meets some Dadaist avant-garde artists, also settled in New York: Man Ray, Baron de Meyer and Alfred Stieglitz are some examples
1922: she moves to Paris. She starts to be influenced by the world of fashion and here she begins her creations.
Her imagination goes wild. African-inspired and cubist sportswear, fabrics with newspaper clippings, dresses with giant lobsters, animals and giant suns.
So she becomes the main antagonist of Coco Chanel. She invented waterproof evening dresses, glasscapes, shocking pink with enormous suns embroidered in gold on the back.
Dresses with aphorisms of Jean Cocteau or Salvador Dali, who inspired her a suit where the pockets were tiny little houses or a dress with a giant lobster!!
So that was a completely different idea of fashion. They used to be inspired and were surrounded by some of the most important intellectuals…
AND YVES SAINT LAURENT
But it is important to remember that Elsa was not the only one inspired by the arts. Also mr Yves Saint Laurent played with his imagination.
Which inspiarations?? Picasso, Andy Warhol, Matisse, Braque, Mondrian and David Hockney…
Finally, Coco Chanel was surrounded by a lot of celebrities and intellectuals such as Jean Cocteau and Jeanne Moreau. Her style was maybe simpler but there was still a philosophy in her work and she was loved for it! Actually still now…
